I’m a sucker for Valentine’s Day. It’s a day full of love, cute gestures… no, I’m kidding, I only like it because it’s my birthday. My husband has it easy – two important days in one. He can never give the excuse, “oops, I forgot.”
I decided to take full advantage of celebrating my special day *cough* week *cough*, and I persuaded him to take some self portraits with me. I had a vision in mind of doing this vintage style, classic creative portrait him simply standing behind me with a box full of chocolates, covering my eyes as I’m filled with excitement as to what my husband could possibly have in store for me.
Of course, it was all staged, but I hoped it would tell a story of the romance between a husband and a wife treating each other as if it was their first date. He really is my best friend and such a trooper when I have spurts of creative energy to do creative portraits like this. Which led me to my next idea…
I wanted to play a bit more with the light, and emphasize the big day full of love. I wanted the light to burst out of my heart, but it needed to be small enough where you couldn’t actually see the real source of light. That’s when I had the spontaneous idea to use my iPhone light. I hid it inside my hand with the flashlight turned on, and closed up my fingers just enough so the light poured out, but you couldn’t see my phone. Meanwhile, my husband leaned in close and placed his hand on my wrist to create the story that a woman can hold her own heart, but it’s such a beautiful thing when she trusts another to help hold her heart themselves, too.
I edited this collection with brown tones, light contrast for a cinematic, vintage feel, and added grain. I love how they turned out!
